If you own a BMW car you should already know that BMW use timing chains in almost every model of engine that they produce. So, it is recommended to replace your timing chain before failure, otherwise the repair prices can become very high because of the engine damage.

I mean that you need to find out if you have a 3.0 liter Diesel engine with a cast iron or aluminum alloy block. So, for the BMW X5 E70, X6 E71 3.0 liter Diesel engines with the cast iron block, you don’t need to change the timing chain, it also says „it’s for life”.

However, the same BMW 3.0-liter Diesel engines that are made of aluminum, the timing chain changes after you reach 124.000 miles or 200.000 kilometers. If you pass this mileage, you risk of breaking the chain and the repair costs reaches somewhere around 4.000-5.000 euros or 5.000 usd.

Now, you can respond on the question: which is better aluminum alloy or cast iron engine block?
