Today I will show you how to change or replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor on VW Golf Mk4, Bora, Jetta, Passat B5, Caddy, Polo, Skoda Octavia Mk1, Fabia, Seat Leon 1M, Toledo, Crodoba, Ibiza, Audi A3 8P with 1.4 16V & 1.6 16V engine (1998-2006).
Before you replace the coolant temperature sensor, make sure you have the one of the error codes (P0115, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119) and the following symptoms:
– The appearance of the yellow Check Engine warning light on the dashboard
– The car it has a difficult start or won’t start, especially when the engine is cold
– Poor idle, irregular or interrupted
– High fuel consumption
– The radiator fan runs constantly or does not start at all
– Reduced engine power (when the engine is cold)
– The car incorrectly displays the engine temperature on the dashboard
Before you start changing the coolant temperature sensor, wait until the engine cools down.
The temperature sensor is on the right side, when you are facing the engine. Where the white arrow is pointing.
Required tools and parts:
– flat blade screwdriver: https://amzn.to/43rjELa
– 5 mm Allen Key: https://amzn.to/4s2AsUn
– Coolant Temperature Sensor: https://amzn.to/4iMAMlQ
– VCDS scan tool: https://amzn.to/4pXjR2j
1. Remove the coolant tank cap to prevent pressure build-up.
2. Remove the engine cover using a 5 mm Allen key, only if you want to create more space.
Disconnect that rubber hose next to the oil plug.
3. Disconnect the EGR vacuum hose using a flat blade screwdriver.
4. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor plug using a flat blade screwdriver.
When you replace the coolant sensor, you have to do it fast, otherwise you will loose some coolant from the engine cooling system. So, after you remove the old sensor, fit the new sensor immediately.
Here I have the Coolant Temperature Sensor housing assembly where I can show you better how to remove the coolant sensor from it.
5. Remove the plastic ring from the coolant temperature sensor.
6. Remove the temperature sensor and replace it with a new one very quickly if you have not drained the coolant from the engine cooling system. Be careful to remove the temperature sensor with the old ring seal on it, if it is left inside, remove it by hand.
7. Reinstall all other engine parts back: the plastic fuse, sensor plug, vacuum hose and engine cover.
Check the coolant level in the tank and if it has dropped below the minimum, refill with coolant until it reaches the maximum mark.
If the problem with the electric fan has not been solved, check the cables and plugs of the engine cooling system.
Then clear the error codes using a car diagnostic or a VCDS (VAGCOM) scan tool.
