How to check your DPF Filter Level (Soot Level) on VW, Skoda, Audi, Seat using VCDS / VAGCOM diagnostic tool
In this video tutorial I will show you how you can check your DPF Filter or Diesel Particulare Filter level (how clogged it is) or how you can see the calculated soot mass from the Particulate Filter or DPF on the VW Volkswagen Passat B7, Golf 7, Tiguan, Touran, Sharan, Scirocco, Eos , Polo, Skoda Octavia 4, Superb, Seat Leon 3, Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, etc. using the VCDS / VAGCOM diagnostic tool.
Depending on this calculated soot mass, the DPF or particulate filter will be regenerated or replaced.
Start the car.
Connect the VCDS cable to the OBD2 port of the car. On Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi an Seat OBD2 port is located above the pedals. Wait until the green light is on and then connect the other end of the cable to the USB port on the laptop.
Then go to the laptop and open the VCDS software.
Here, if you never used the VCDS cable on your car, you have to click on the Options, then select USB and click Test. If you have OK on K1, K2 and CAN, you can start check the Particulate Filter values.
Then follow the next steps: Select Control Module. 01-Engine. Advanced Measuring Values and here you have to look on the list from the right side for „Particle filter: soot mass calculated” and „Particle filter: soot mass measured”. The “Particle filter: soot mass measured” should have a value close to zero (now, it is 0.59 grams)
If we look at the “Particle filter: soot mass calculated”, we see a value of 9 grams. Which is very good.
If the DPF is below 18 grams, then the regeneration is done automatically without notifying you in any way.
When the value is between 18-25 grams, the DPF should start regenerating the diesel particulate filter.
If the value exceeds 25 grams (up to 40 grams maximum), then the DPF warning light will light up on the dash and you have to make a special trip with the car for regeneration. This means driving at a speed of more than 60 km/h, at a speed of 2,500 rpm for about 15 to 20 minutes.
If the value exceeds 40 grams, then the DPF warning light, the Check Engine warning light and the Glow Plug warning light will appear, which means that your car will no longer have power and will enter in Limp Mode. To fix this problem, you will have to make a trip to the car repair shop for a forced regeneration which can only be done from the diagnostic tool.
These values given for the soot mass calculated are only valid for Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi and Seat car models equipped with the 2.0 liter Diesel engine.
After checking these values, you can give it Done, Go Back. Close Controller, Go Back and then Go Back and Exit.
