This VW Golf 5 Mk5 (2004-2008), Jetta, Tiguan, Passat B6, Touran, Eos, Skoda Octavia 2, Superb, Seat Leon, Altea 2.0 TDI timing belt replacement is not recommended for amateurs. Can lead to engine damage if it’s not done correctly.

This video below is showing you the steps to replace / change the timing belt and water pump kit on VW Golf Mk5, Jetta, Passat 2.0 TDI 2004-2008. Enjoy!

  1. Open the hood and remove the engine cover
  2. Release those two clips for cambelt (timing belt) top cover and remove it
  3. Remove the expansion (coolant) tank (unscrew 2xT25 torx)
  4. Remove the washer bottle filler neck
  5. Remove fuel filter housing and move the expansion tank and the fuel filter (3×10 mm bolt)
  6. Remove the part that is holding the fuel filter
  7. Remove the engine undertray
  8. Remove the right side wheel
  9. Remove the o/s lower wheel arch liner
  10. Remove the rubber shield from the crankshaft pulley
  11. Take the aux belt out
  12. Remove the crankshaft pulley
  13. Take the lower cover out
  14. Support the engine with a jack or something safely
  15. Remove engine top mount bolts and then take the mount out
  16. Using a 16 mm open ended spanner release aux belt tensioner and lock with pin
  17. Remove the engine bracket
  18. Take the upper cover out
  19. Align crank pulley with mark on case
  20. Clean the inside
  21. Mark the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulleys
  22. Loose the screw from the tensioner belt
  23. Take the cambelt out
  24. Remove the tensioner belt
  25. Remove those two timing belt rollers
  26. Let the coolant drain in a bucket
  27. Remove the water pump
  28. Install the new water pump
  29. Check if you install it correctly
  30. Tighten the bolts from the water pump
  31. Install the new timing belt rollers
  32. Install the new tensioner belt
  33. Install the new timing belt
  34. Install the timing belt without moving marks from the cranckshaft pulley and the camshaft pulleys
  35. Tighten the timing belt and the tensioner
  36. Rotate the engine from the crankshaft pulley to check if the the timing belt is installed correctly
  37. Refit in reverse order all the engine parts.
