This VW Golf 5 Mk5 (2004-2008), Jetta, Tiguan, Passat B6, Touran, Eos, Skoda Octavia 2, Superb, Seat Leon, Altea 2.0 TDI timing belt replacement is not recommended for amateurs. Can lead to engine damage if it’s not done correctly.
This video below is showing you the steps to replace / change the timing belt and water pump kit on VW Golf Mk5, Jetta, Passat 2.0 TDI 2004-2008. Enjoy!
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover
- Release those two clips for cambelt (timing belt) top cover and remove it
- Remove the expansion (coolant) tank (unscrew 2xT25 torx)
- Remove the washer bottle filler neck
- Remove fuel filter housing and move the expansion tank and the fuel filter (3×10 mm bolt)
- Remove the part that is holding the fuel filter
- Remove the engine undertray
- Remove the right side wheel
- Remove the o/s lower wheel arch liner
- Remove the rubber shield from the crankshaft pulley
- Take the aux belt out
- Remove the crankshaft pulley
- Take the lower cover out
- Support the engine with a jack or something safely
- Remove engine top mount bolts and then take the mount out
- Using a 16 mm open ended spanner release aux belt tensioner and lock with pin
- Remove the engine bracket
- Take the upper cover out
- Align crank pulley with mark on case
- Clean the inside
- Mark the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulleys
- Loose the screw from the tensioner belt
- Take the cambelt out
- Remove the tensioner belt
- Remove those two timing belt rollers
- Let the coolant drain in a bucket
- Remove the water pump
- Install the new water pump
- Check if you install it correctly
- Tighten the bolts from the water pump
- Install the new timing belt rollers
- Install the new tensioner belt
- Install the new timing belt
- Install the timing belt without moving marks from the cranckshaft pulley and the camshaft pulleys
- Tighten the timing belt and the tensioner
- Rotate the engine from the crankshaft pulley to check if the the timing belt is installed correctly
- Refit in reverse order all the engine parts.
