If your Ford remote or key no longer works from a distance, if you have to press the buttons multiple times, or if you notice the car is becoming slow to respond, the key battery may be dead. For many Ford models produced between 2010 and 2015, you can replace the battery yourself at home in just a few minutes.

This guide explains how to replace the battery in the key for the Ford Fiesta, Mondeo, S-Max, C-Max, and other models from the same period. The key’s shape and the opening method may vary depending on the model year and remote version, so always check the battery type and the instructions in your car’s owner’s manual.

What you need:

Steps for replacing the battery:

1. Press the two side buttons to release the key housing cover.

2. Remove the key blade.

3. Use a thin flat-head screwdriver to pry open the cover on the other side of the key.

Note: replace the old battery with the new one within 1 minute; otherwise, the key may lose synchronization and stop working properly!

4. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new one.

Take note of which side faces up—usually the „+” side.

Ford uses a 3V Varta CR 2032 battery, which you can find linked in the video description and the first comment below!

5. Reassemble the key blade and the two housing covers.

Test the remote near the vehicle and check the lock and unlock functions.

Which battery does a Ford key use?

The battery type can vary between Ford Fiesta, Mondeo, S-Max and C-Max key fobs, depending on the key design and vehicle specification. Check the marking on the old battery, your owner’s manual or the information for your specific key. Don’t choose a battery based on the car model alone—the size and thickness must match.

If the remote doesn’t work after the replacement

Check that the battery is compatible and installed with the correct polarity. Make sure the contacts are in place and the case is fully closed. If the remote still doesn’t respond, the issue could be with the battery contacts, the key case or the remote’s synchronisation. Consult your Ford owner’s manual or contact an automotive key specialist.

Replacing the battery in a 2010–2015 Ford key fob is usually straightforward. Work carefully, use the correct battery and avoid forcing the case to help keep your remote in good condition.
