Resetting the oil service light on Volkswagen Golf 8, Tiguan, Arteon, Passat B9, Amarok, T-Roc, T-Cross models produced between 2021 and 2026 can be done, in many cases, directly from the car menu. The procedure is useful after performing an oil and filter change (car maintenance), so that the service message and the remaining mileage until the next overhaul are updated.
Important: Resetting the service light should only be done after performing an oil change. The procedure may vary depending on the equipment, type of dashboard clocks, infotainment system and software installed on the car.
What you need to check before resetting:
– change the engine oil and oil filter;
– check the oil level;
– do not reset the service light if the service has not been performed.
On some Volkswagen models, there are separate intervals for oil change and periodic inspection. Resetting one does not automatically reset the other.
Reset from the instrument panel menu:
1. Turn on the ignition (do not start the engine).
Press the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake or clutch pedal. The warning lights on the dashboard should come on and the electronic systems should be active.
2: Press one of the buttons with 2 displays as symbols to enter the on-screen menu.
3. Select “Driving time/distance” by pressing the button on the right with the two displays
4. And here at “Since start” hold down the same button with the 2 displays for 5 seconds and then release it to enter the Service menu.
If you select “Service” you will find information about the inspection service and the oil change or car maintenance.
5. Go to “Reset oil change service” using the down arrow button and select it using the OK button.
6. At the question “Reset oil change service?” you will need to press the OK button again to confirm. This will reset the oil change service and then you will see the “Service Interval Reset” message on display.
7: Turn off the ignition, wait a few seconds, then start the car again. Check if the oil change message has disappeared.
If the service message remains displayed, there may be several causes:
– the procedure is not compatible with the car version;
– you tried to reset the inspection instead of the oil change;
– the car needs to be reset with a diagnostic tester;
– there is a stored error in the system;
– the instrument cluster software needs to be updated;
– the ignition was not set to the correct mode;
– the doors or hood are not closed;
– the battery is weak.
In these cases, a tester compatible with the Volkswagen platform can be used, such as a professional car tester. The reset must be done carefully, as incorrect parameter changes can affect the calculation of service intervals.
How to check if the reset was performed correctly after the reset:
– Turn the ignition off completely
– Wait a few seconds
– Start the car again
– Access the Service or Vehicle status menu.
– Check the displayed mileage and the period until the next oil change.
– Confirm that the service message no longer appears when starting.
Why it is important to reset the interval correctly?
A correct reset helps you:
– Easily track the next service;
– Avoid premature appearance of the service message;
– Keep a clear record of maintenance;
– Respect the car’s maintenance schedule;
– Reduce the risk of exceeding the recommended oil change interval.
However, the message on the dashboard does not replace periodic checking of the oil level. The level should be checked manually or according to the instructions in the car manual, especially before long trips.
