Have you noticed that your car no longer responds instantly to commands or the „Replace key battery” warning message has appeared on the dashboard? It is a clear sign that your remote control battery is running low.

Fortunately, owners of Golf 8, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, Tiguan 2026, Passat B9, Skoda Superb, Octavia 8, Seat Leon (models produced after 2020) can change the battery at home, quickly and without risk.

In this guide, we explain step by step how to do this, without having to go to the car shop.

What do you need?

– A new CR2032 battery: This is the standard 3 Volt battery used by almost all modern keys in the VAG group. (You can find it HERE).

– A flathead screwdriver (small) to open the key case.

Steps to replace the battery:

Most new VW, Skoda and Seat keys (the „smart key” or „keyless entry” type) have a similar design.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Remove the blade from the key by pressing the button on the side of the case.

2. Remove the cover of the case (the one with the VW logo) using the blade from the key.

3. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the battery from the key.

VW Tiguan 2026 is using a CR2032 battery for the key fob that you can find it below in the video description!

The battery must be installed within one minute of removing the old one, otherwise there is a risk of it becoming out of sync.

4. Install the new CR2032 battery (make sure to respect the polarity, i.e. the side with the „+” must be oriented according to the markings on the case – usually facing up).

5. Replace the cover and insert the key blade back into the housing.

Useful tips for a longer life:

Do not touch the surface of the battery: When handling the new battery, try to hold it by the edges, not by the flat sides (finger grease can affect the electrical contact).

Quality: Opt for batteries from established brands (Panasonic, Duracell, Varta). The price difference is minimal, but the life will be considerably longer.

Don’t delay: If the key shows signs of fatigue, change the battery immediately. Otherwise, you risk being unable to unlock or start the car in isolated places.

This guide is valid for most recent models in the VAG group with „Keyless Access” keys.
