If you have a Mazda 6 or CX-5 with the 2.2 liter Skyactive Diesel engine (2013-2017) and you see the “Engine Oil Pressure Inspection Required” message and the red exclamation mark triangle warning light, you should not ignore it. These warnings can mean two things:
1. The oil pressure is indeed too low (which is a serious situation).
2. There is a problem with the engine oil pressure sensor.
What to do immediately:
1. Turn off the engine as quickly as possible, safely.
* Do not continue driving if the message remains on.
* Running without oil pressure can destroy the engine in a matter of minutes.
2. Check the oil level with the dipstick.
* If it is below the minimum, top up with the recommended oil.
* If the level is normal, do not assume that everything is fine. The pressure may still be insufficient.
3. Listen to the engine to see if it is knocking.
4. Do not start the engine again until the cause is verified, if the warning light appears immediately after starting.
You can find the video tutorial on changing this sensor on the
Mazda CX-5 2.2 Diesel 2013 below in the video description!
In our case, we checked all the things mentioned above and everything was ok. We set off again with fear and hope that it would not happen again along the 200 km route that we still had to travel. Unfortunately, the message “Engine Oil Pressure Inspection Required” and the warning light with a triangle and a red exclamation mark appeared twice more until our destination. But each time I turned off the car, then started it again and when I saw that the warning light and the message no longer appeared on the dashboard, I set off again.
Finally, the car was brought to a car service, I checked the oil pressure in the engine with a pressure gauge. From here I saw that the oil pressure was normal, so I decided to change the oil pressure sensor in the engine and that’s how I solved the problem. You can find the video tutorial on changing this sensor on the Mazda CX-5 2.2 Diesel Skyactive from 2013 HERE!
But you have to take into account that these already known causes also frequently appear on Mazda models with the 2.2 Diesel Skyactive engine:
Dilution of the oil with diesel fuel (or the ingress of fuel or unburned vapors into the engine oil) due to DPF (or Diesel Particulate Filter) regenerations.
* The oil pump sorber may be clogged.
* The oil pump is worn.
* The timing chain is stretched, which can affect the operation of the engine.
Internal engine wear (bearings or bushings), if the car has been running a lot with old or degraded oil.
If the message appeared immediately after the oil change, check that:
– the correct oil was used (corresponding to the Mazda model);
– the oil filter is installed correctly;
– the engine oil level is between Minimum and Maximum.
Our recommendation is that if the engine is running and this message appears:
* You should not drive the car until it is checked.
* Check the oil level with the dipstick:
* if it is above Maximum, it is very likely to be contaminated with diesel;
* if it smells strongly of diesel, it is a clear sign of dilution.
Go to a car service that will measure the actual oil pressure with a pressure gauge. This is the first test that needs to be done and takes a while.
If the pressure is normal, change the engine oil pressure sensor.
If the pressure is low, the next step is to dismantle the oil pan to check the oil pan and the oil pump.
On this engine, ignoring the message can lead to bearing seizure and crankshaft failure. A preventive repair of a few hundred euros can avoid a repair of several thousand euros.
