Lost Key Signal or the car key doesn’t work? Start by resynchronise the key fob of your VW Golf, Passat, Skoda Octavia, Kodiaq, Seat Leon 5f, Ateca (2016-2024) Key Fob.

How to resynchronize (program) the key / remote control of Seat Ateca, Leon (5F), Arona, Ibiza, Tarraco, VW Golf 7, Golf 8, T-Roc, T-Cross, Tiguan, Arteon, Skoda Superb, Kodiaq, Karoq, etc.

Resynchronizing the key fob for the mentioned VW Golf 7, Golf 8, Arteon, Passat B8, T-Roc, Tiguan, Skoda Superb, Kodiaq, Karoq, Seat Ateca, Leon (5F), Arona, Tarraco, Ibiza (2016-2024)  is often necessary after replacing the battery, after signal loss or after interventions in the car’s electronics.

If you frequently operate the unlocking button on the key fob out of range, you may no longer be able to unlock or lock the car with the key. In this case, the key will no longer work when you want to use it.

Follow the steps below for simple methods that frequently work; if you can’t, go to an authorized service center or a locksmith with programming equipment.

These key resynchronization methods are also mentioned in the car’s user manual.

Preparation — what you need:

– Original remote control (or a compatible remote control) with a new battery

– Spare key (if the car has one)

– Car has to be with all doors and tailgate closed.

Time: 5–15 minutes

Attention to the immobilizer: if the car requires electronic reprogramming, intervention at the dealer or an authorized service center may be necessary.

Method 1:

Stand next to the car and briefly press the door unlock button on the key twice in a row. If method 1 does not work, proceed to method 2.

Method 2:

1. Remove the key blade.

2. Remove the cover from the driver’s door handle hub.

Insert the blade through the hole at the bottom of the hub cap and gently lift the cap up to remove it.

3. Press the door unlock button on the key once while holding the key close to the car.

4. Then manually unlock the driver’s door using the key blade, within 1 minute. That’s it!

Don’t forget to reinstall the cover on the door hub and put the key blade back in the key fob.

Method 3 — reprogramming / using an additional key (when you have another working key).

If you have a working key, use it to start the car.

With the engine running, use the non-working key to try resynchronizing by pressing LOCK/UNLOCK (see steps in Method 1).

Sometimes the system recognizes the new key automatically when there is an authorized key already programmed.

What can happen if you fail:

– The key may need programming with diagnostic equipment (VAG-COM / VCDS diagnostic tool or equivalent)

– The key is faulty (problems with the transponder or transmitter)

– Problems with the immobilizer / ECU.

When to take it to the car dealer:

– The key does not work at all after replacing the battery and after trying the methods above

– You have lost all your keys or you can’t start the car

– You need an additional key / programming – your Seat, VW, Skoda dealer or an authorized locksmith can program the keys safely.

Quick final tips:

– Check the ked battery first; many „malfunctions” are due to a weak battery.

– Keep a working spare key – it will make reprogramming easier.

Write down the key code / VIN when you go to the dealer for programming, they will ask for it.
