VW Touareg 7P, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne (2011-2017) Car Battery Location & Replacement
The VW Touareg 7P, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne (2011–2017) share many electronic and structural solutions. Changing the battery in these SUVs is accessible to an amateur with basic tools, but requires attention to registering or coding the battery in the battery management system (BMS) after installation. Otherwise, errors, performance degradation or functions such as Start-Stop inoperative may occur.

Where is the battery located on a VW Touareg 7P, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne (2011-2017)?
The 12V battery is located under the driver’s seat and not in the engine compartment, as you can see.
Park on a flat surface, apply the handbrake and remove the key from the ignition.
1. Slide the driver’s seat as far back as possible to remove the plastic cover from the rail
2. Unscrew the two screws on the seat rails using a Spline Bit S2 M10
3. Slide the seat as far forward and remove the two screws on the back using a Spline Bit S2 M10
4. Slide the seat in the middle and then lift it up to access the battery
5. Pull aside the carpet and remove the screw on the pipe with a Torx 25
6. Remove the plastic pipe and then remove the clips on the battery cover using a straight screwdriver
7. Remove the battery cover
8. Unscrew the metal bracket on the side of the battery using a 10 mm socket and then remove it
9. Unscrew the screw on the bracket on the corner of the battery using a 10 mm socket
10. Loosen the screws on the battery terminals and then disconnect them from the terminals. The corner bracket is removed after removing the cable from the negative terminal. Always disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal (–) first and then the POSITIVE terminal (+)
11. Remove the battery outside and replace it with a new one (tighten the terminals firmly, but without excessive force; torque value approximately 10–12 Nm). Connect the POSITIVE terminal (+) first, then the NEGATIVE terminal (–).
12. Follow the above steps in reverse order to reassemble all parts.
13. Use a diagnostic (VCDS / ODIS / OBD Eleven / PIWIS) to register the new battery in the BMS module, it is recommended and, in many cases, mandatory. The procedure confirms the capacity and type of battery (AGM/EFB), and the system will adapt the charge management. If it is not registered, the following may occur: warnings on the dashboard, Start-Stop limitations, regeneration/brake-energy problems. If you do not have a car diagnostic, go to an authorized service center / auto electrician. Checks after installation
14. Start the engine and check the errors on the dashboard.
Test functions: Start-Stop, headlights, infotainment, electric windows, etc.
If persistent errors occur, use the scanner to clear the error codes or take the car to a service center.
Tips and warnings
Use the correct type (AGM vs. EFB) recommended for the vehicle; many modern Touareg/Q7/Cayenne require AGM.
Never touch the terminals with a metal tool when connecting the terminals; risk of short circuit.
Before removing the battery, save the radio code, seat memory, etc. (some cars retain their data, others do not).
Model recommendations/values (check the car’s technical data sheet):
Type: AGM recommended for most engines with Start-Stop and complex electrical system.
Indicative capacity: 95–110 Ah (varies depending on engine and equipment).
Conclusion
Physically changing the battery is relatively simple: disconnect NEGATIVE, remove, install new, reconnect POSITIVE → NEGATIVE. The critical step is to register the battery in the BMS with a diagnostic tool to avoid errors and incorrect system operation.
Here are the steps for registering a new battery on VW Touareg 7P / Audi Q7 / Porsche Cayenne (2011–2017), for the most commonly used scanners: VCDS, OBDeleven (Pro), ODIS and PIWIS.
What to do before registration:
Ignition in ON position— engine OFF, some tools require engine ON, check the tool requirement.
Minimized electrical consumers (lights off, equipment off).
If possible, charge the battery to ~80–100% before registration.
VCDS (Ross-Tech)
Connect VCDS to the OBD-II port and start the software.
Select the vehicle (Make/Model) and access the module group: 19 – CAN Gateway or 01 – Engine (depending on version) or 37 – ABS (sometimes 46 – Central Electrics).
Open the module 61/62/77 (Battery regulation/Battery monitoring) — the name may vary; usually it is 19 – Gateway → „Select Control Module” → „61 – Battery” / „77 – Battery Regulation” / „19 – CAN Gateway” if you cannot find it directly.
Choose the „Adaptation” function or the „Measuring Blocks/Advanced Functions” menu → „Battery Change” / „Replace Battery”.
Enter the required parameters: battery type (AGM/EFB/Conventional), capacity in Amperes (e.g.: 95, 100, 110), position (if requested). Confirm.
Execute the procedure and wait for confirmation. Clear the fault codes and restart the vehicle.
Check the Start-Stop functions and the BMS status in the measurements.
OBDeleven (Pro)
Connect to OBDeleven and select the vehicle.
Go to „Control Units” → „Select control unit” → search for „Battery regulation” / „Battery monitoring” (e.g.: 19/61/77).
Choose “Coding” or “Adaptation” → search for “Battery replacement” / “Battery change”.
Choose the battery type (AGM/EFB) and enter the Ampere value when prompted.
Apply the changes — OBDeleven will run the script and confirm.
Reset the fault codes and check the Start-Stop function.
ODIS (Volkswagen/Audi dealer software)
Connect ODIS and perform vehicle identification.
Select the diagnostics for the Battery Management / Battery Monitoring module.
Access the service applications (Guided Functions) → „Replace battery” / „Battery registration”.
Follow the guided steps: select battery type, enter Ampere, confirm. ODIS performs the necessary calibrations.
Finish and then check the codes.
PIWIS (Porsche)
Connect the PIWIS tester and select the model.
Go to the relevant ECU (Battery/Basic Vehicle Electr.).
Select „Battery replacement” in the service/guided functions menu.
Enter the battery type and capacity when prompted; follow the instructions displayed.
Save and check for errors.
