TUTORIAL: How to replace Heater Core (Exchanger Heating Radiator) on VW Golf Mk4, 4, GTI, Jetta, Bora in 14 steps

You notice that you don’t have heat in your car and you don’t know what to do?  Well, maybe you have a problem with this heater core. First you have to know that heater core converts the heat from your engines cooling system to heat for you in the cabin. So, in this video tutorial we are going to show you how to replace this heater core (Exchanger Heating Radiator) on VW Golf Mk4, IV, 4, GTI, Jetta, Bora in just 14 steps.

How do you know that your heater core needs replacement:
– windows are fogging up
– you smell water coolant in the cabin
– you don’t have heat in your car
– the windshield and windows are greasy
– low coolant level in your coolant tank (reservoir)
– the insulation mat is wet
– the presence of moisture

You have to know that total time for this procedure is somewhere between 8 and 16 hours of work.

First, you have to discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant and drain the engine coolant.

But, before you start removing the heater core you have to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and drain the engine coolant. Then you have to remove:

instrument cluster (see video tutorial)

– A pillar trims

– front center console (see video tutorial)

radio cage (see video tutorial)

glove box (see video tutorial)

headlight switch (see video tutorial)

steering wheel airbag (see video tutorial)

steering wheel (see video tutorial)

clock spring airbag (see video tutorial)

signal and wipers levers (see video tutorial)

wiper arms (see video tutorial)

wipers cowl vent grille (see video tutorial)

windshield wiper motor assembly (see video tutorial)

dashboard (dash panel) (see video tutorial)

steering column (see video tutorial)

1. Remove all the screws from the crossbar and from the steering column using a 10 mm and 13 mm socket
Remove the wires from the crossbar and remove the plastic part from the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) box
2. Remove the 13 mm bolt from behind the wiper assembly from the outside
3. Remove those 30 Torx screws from the steering column
4. Remove those two 10 mm nuts from the relay box
Remove also the 10 mm nut from the wires
5. Remove the T30 Torx screw from the Comfort Body Control Module and disconnect the wiring harness
Take the cables out from the crossbar
Disconnect the cables from the passenger’s airbag
6. Remove the crossbar
Remove the upper side of the HVAC box
Behind U-shaped flaps cut into the heat shield you will find the 10 mm nuts
Also disconnect the AC (Air Conditioner) lines
7. Remove those two coolant hose retaining clips and then take the hoses out from the core heater
8. Behind U-shaped flaps cut into the heat shield you will find the 10 mm nuts
9. Remove the 10 mm nuts
10. Remove the 10 mm nuts from the air conditioning lines
11. Remove the wire harnesses and cables from the HVAC box
12. Cut those zip ties from the HVAC box
13. Take the HVAC box outside
14. Remove the heater core from the HVAC box taking aside the clips.

If you want to buy a second-hand unit, the heater core can be identified by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) part number (1J1819031). You can also call a VW dealership with your VIN number, and they can tell you the OEM part number.
