Choosing the right engine oil for your car may seem like a simple task, but it is actually an essential decision for the performance and longevity of your vehicle. Engine oil has the fundamental role of lubricating the engine, reducing friction, cooling components and preventing corrosion. So, how do you choose the RIGHT engine oil?

So, the easiest thing is to access the official website of the oil you want to put in your engine. On the website you will find exactly the product you need after following some simple steps such as adding your car brand, car model, production year, engine and horsepower of your car engine.

Let’s choose the Castrol official website and here you have to go to menu on the top left (with two horizontal lines as a symbol), then go down to the left where it says “Product finder”, here you have to  select your continent. In my case is Europe and Eurasia, and here you have to choose the country where are you from. In my case is  United Kingdom. After that you have to select the Car brand, in my case I choose Mazda, then car model, in may case is CX-5, production year 2015, and below you will see a list of the car versions, depending on horsepower, transmission and front or all-wheel drive. I select the 2.2 Diesel version of 129 Kilowatt, with all-wheel drive, year of production (2012-2015). And you already see the recommended oil is Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 C3.

If you go back, and look on top, where it says Compartment filter, you will also find Castrol oils recommended for Rear Differential, Transferbox, Manual and Automatic Transmission, and Brake Fluid. For brake fluid, Castrol also specify the service interval or fluid change, respectively after 20,000 km or 24 months (2 years).

Manufacturers provide specific information on the type of oil recommended, including the viscosity grade (for example, 5W-30 or 10W-40) and the required specifications (such as API or ACEA standards).

3. Viscosity grade: The viscosity grade indicates how the oil flows at different temperatures. Oil with a lower number before the letter „W” (which stands for Winter) is more fluid at low temperatures, which helps with starting the engine in cold weather conditions. Oil with a higher number after the „W” offers better protection at high temperatures, which is essential for vehicles that operate in high temperatures.

4. Norms and standards: Make sure the oil you choose meets the necessary norms and specifications for your car. Motor oils are tested and labeled according to international standards, which guarantees their compatibility and efficiency.

5. Conditions of use: Think about how you use your car. If you drive short distances in the city or have an aggressive driving style, you may need an oil that is more resistant to degradation. If you drive frequently on the highway, a synthetic oil may be more appropriate.
