Full install video for aftermarket Trailer Hitch (tow bar) and Wiring Harness on Volkswagen Touran (2011-2016) in 15 easy steps
Here is a video tutorial on how to install an aftermarket trailer hitch (towbar) and wiring harness on Volkswagen Touran (2011-2016) in 15 easy steps. This video is available for other similar like Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Octavia, Seat, Audi car models.
Here we have the instructions on how to remove the rear bumper of the car.
In the package you have also some wires, a fuse, some cable ties to secure the cables and bolts to install the trailer hitch plug.
Here are the steps you need to follow to install an aftermarket Trailer Hitch on a Volkswagen Touran (2011-2016) or other similar VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi models.
Tools needed:
– Torx T25
– trim removal tool
– flat blade screwdriver
– WD-40 degreaser spray
– 13 mm, 17 mm, 19 mm socket (and 17 mm and 19 mm wrench)
First start by removing the rear spoiler:
- Remove the 5 screws that attach the wheel arch to the rear bumper using a Torx T25.
Do the same on the left side.
2. Remove the 4 bolts under the rear spoiler using a T25 Torx.
Before you start removing these rusty bolts, apply a degrease spray to each one. This will make them easier to remove or prevent them from breaking.
3. Remove the two taillights (first remove the plastic on the taillight and then remove the screw that holds the taillight to the body using a flat blade screwdriver).
4. Slide the taillight to the left (if you are removing the left taillight) to remove it.
Disconnect the taillight connector using a flat blade screwdriver. First, remove the rear bumper from the side mounts, then from under the taillights using a flat blade screwdriver.
Do the same on the right side: remove the side bar, then remove it from the clips under the taillight.
5. Disconnect the connector from the parking sensors (only if the rear bumper has parking sensors).
6. Unscrew the rear bumper reinforcement bar using a 13 mm socket.
The reinforcement bar has two bolts on the left side and 4 screws on the right side.
7. Remove the reinforcement bar.
8. Install the trailer hitch plug bracket on the new reinforcement bar using a 13 mm socket and a 13 mm wrench to hold it from the other side.
9. Install the the new reinforcement bar and tighten the 4 screws using a 17 mm socket.
If you don’t have enough space to tighten the second screw, you can loosen that middle screw from the wheel arch using a T20 Torx. This way you can create more space to tighten the screw.
10. Connect the wires to the plug on the trailer hitch according to the instructions.
First, insert that rubber cap from the trailer hitch plug on the cables and then connect the cables to the plug
11. Install the trailer hitch plug on the bracket and fasten the 3 screws and nuts.
12. Pull the cable from the trailer hitch plug inside the car using the drain hole from the car body on the left side and connect all the cables according to the instructions.
According to the instructions, we have to insert the two red cables, which have lugs on the ends, into the fuse holder. Then fix the fuse in the holder and connect the end of the short red cable to the positive terminal on the battery.
We gave up connecting the red cable to the positive terminal of the battery and connected it directly to the black and red cable from the cables in the trunk.
So in this wiring diagram it shows us how to correctly connect the cables to the left-side taillight:
We connected the cables to the left-side taillight in the following way:
- I connected the yellow cable from the socket to the black and white cable (to the left turn signal)
- I connected the black cable from the trailer hitch plug to the brown cable that goes to the left running light)
- I connected the red cable from the trailer hitch plug to the red cable (to the brake light)
- I did not connect the blue cable to the fog light cable
And I connected the cables from the trailer hitch plug for the right brake light in the following way:
- I connected the green cable to the green and brown cable (the right turn signal light)
- And I did not connect the brown cable
- I did not connect these two pink and blue cables either.
I connected the two white and black cables that represent the ground to a bolt on the car body.
I connected the red cable, which is thicker, to the red and black cable that is a little thicker, about the same thickness as the red one.
13. Cut the rear bumper according to the instructions in the package.
14. Install the rear bumper on the car. Be sure to connect all the plugs back in place, including the one from the parking sensors before fixing it in place.
15. Install the trailer hitch using the screws and nuts in the package.
Here we have the installation kit for the trailer hitch in which we also receive the screws for attaching the hook. We also have a small box where we have some plastic clamps with which we can attach the cables from the hook installation and the bolts with which the trailer hitch is attached.
